What the Mountbatten Program includes

If you are accepted onto the Program and placed with a host organization, the Mountbatten Program provides you with:

Your living allowance

Each Trainee is paid a living allowance by Mountbatten Program during the 12 months in London. The Trainee living allowance is GBP £700 per month and is paid monthly in arrears. Accommodation is also included.

No salary or allowance is paid to Trainees by the host organizations.

Funding the Program

Applicants fund the Program through a number of ways including personal savings and family loans.

Eligible Unites States citizens and permanent residents/green card holders may qualify for a Sallie Mae Smart Option Student Loan.

This information does not constitute an endorsement by the Mountbatten Program.

Undergraduate / Graduate Loan Deferments

It may be possible, for United States citizens to defer prior undergraduate or graduate loans while enrolled at least halftime at an eligible school (St Mary's University, Twickenham or The University of Chester). If you have a loan deferment request, please contact your admissions office. While most loans are successfully deferred, the Program makes no guarantee. If your loan deferment request is not approved, it is your responsibility to make payments according to the terms and conditions of your loan.

Note: Loan deferment requests cannot be submitted until you are placed with a London host organization.

Additional expenses

Trainees are responsible for the following additional expenses:

  • UK visa application fee: USD $300-400 (Subject to change without notice. Price is based on current exchange rate)
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP £400. This is a mandatory fee as part of your visa application and gives you access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS)
  • Travel to the nearest embassy or consulate for a visa interview
  • Airfare costs to and from London, which vary according to the time of year (ISIC cards may provide some discounts)
  • Personal possessions insurance
  • Approximately GBP £1,500 will be needed to cover expenses during the first few weeks. The Program makes arrangements for participants to open a UK bank account as soon as possible after their arrival in the UK
  • Travel to and from your placement

In addition, a security deposit is required for the Mountbatten Program accommodation. The Program will deduct GBP £200 from the Trainee living allowance. This will be deducted in instalments of £60, £70 and £70, from the second, third and fourth living allowance payments.

This deposit is returned approximately 4 weeks after completion of the Program, less any required payments for breakages, damage to apartment furniture, etc.

A fee of GBP £10 per month will also be deducted from your living allowance for basic telephone and internet service at your accommodation.
