June 2017 Edition

Changing Times

Welcome to our June edition of MNN, and we hope it finds you safe and well in this fast changing world of surprising events. We commiserate with all of those who lost loved ones in the shocking Grenfell Tower fire in London, and sincerely hope nothing of this scale happens again.

Meanwhile, at the Institute there is a lot to tell you about this month. First and foremost, it is with sadness we inform you that two very important people associated with the Institute have passed away this month. Lady Mountbatten, our Institute Patron, and Professor Michael Hayes, one of our board of directors and the former Vice Principal of St. Mary's University. You can read the obituary for Lady Mountbatten and there is an opportunity to contribute to a book of condolences/memories for her family - please see under her photograph below, and for Professor Michael Hayes here. We regret both of their passings, and our thoughts are with their families at this time.

Our alumni platform, Mountbatten Connect continues to grow with a current membership of over 1,400 alumni members spread across a vast range of intakes. Our Jobs Board has 35 positions at the time of writing, the 3 most recent of which are actually at the Institute itself. All 3 are New York office based roles, comprising an Admissions Manager; a Marketing & Recruitment Director; and, a Resident Counselor. All the details and how to apply can be found on the postings.

This newsletter continues to feature alumni entrepreneurs with all the feature articles bar the fundraiser being an alum with their own business of some kind. Please continue sharing your projects, businesses, and causes with us wherever you are in the world. It's great to be part of this expansive, global and connected alumni network.

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we share this announcement from our Director General, Dr Paul Beresford-Hill, regarding our patron, Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

Lady Mountbatten's funeral is to being held in London today, and will be attended by our Directors.

We would like to put together a book of condolences/memories of the impact of your Mountbatten year, to give to the family of Lady Mountbatten. Please send any thoughts/memories or comments to Jo Harvey.

Alum
of the Month

Nick Coombes
New York, January 2004

"I remember sitting in an interview realising how dull the job was and that the idea of another position as a small cog in a big machine without any kind of influence wasn't very appealing. I then began thinking about going freelance and started to make videos for friends' businesses, which made me realise I could survive independently. So I operated for about 18 months as a sole trader, slowly gaining more clients and growing my network. Eventually one of our clients said I needed to become a Limited Company to be on their supplier's list, so I set up as BOUCHE in 2012, a video production business making content for businesses and brands"

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Tahlia Gray

New York, March 2011

Tahlia has now launched her London-based hosiery brand, Sheer Chemistry, specialising in tights for women of all shades of brown, with an exciting collaboration with W London Hotel. Inspired by her time living in New York, the idea was born out of frustration from the lack of hosiery products available for women of colour. Driven by a mission to create a more diverse perception of beauty, Sheer Chemistry launches with a collection of tights in five luscious shades of brown, now available both online and at Soho’s iconic W London, who will sell the tights at their AWAY Spa exclusively until 7 July 2017. "Sheer Chemistry has come to bring greater diversity to the hosiery market and to provide women of all shades of brown with much needed choice... To collaborate with such an iconic hotel as W London, and to work with those who understand our message and passion – particularly at Sheer Chemistry’s inception – is both hugely exciting and humbling."

Andrew Dawson

New York, March 2012

Andrew, who apparently hates running, is going to run the Westminster 10k on 9th July for Save The Children Fund. Career Speaker Series: "People, Ideas & Opportunities"

We were delighted to host our latest Career Panel in New York on Thursday June 22, 2017 for our August 2016 intake at the HQ of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesman of the City of New York. On the panel were 4 of our esteemed Alumni: Amy Clarkson, UBS (New York, August 2011); Talie Schwager, Flashpoint (London, August 2013); Nanayaa Kumi, United Nations (London. August 2005); and Patrick Walsh, Decoded (New York, January 2007). We were also delighted to have Sarah-Anne Hughes on the panel, from LinkedIn alongside our alumni. The panel was welcomed by Dr Paul Beresford-Hill, and moderated by Richard Sexton, CEO of Mountbatten in New York. It was a lively debate where the panel discussed interview etiquette, networking, decision making and how to make the most of your Mountbatten year amongst other topics. Sarah-Anne gave the audience important insights as to how to most effectively utilize the LinkedIn platform. The audience was asked a list of questions, 1. Do you have a LinkedIn profile, 2. Do you have a photo on your profile, 3. Do you have 500+ connections and 4. Have you ever applied for a job on LinkedIn. In a show of hands if your hand was still up at the end your are the most influential people in your network!

The feedback from current Trainees was enthusiastic and positive – to hear the alumni insights was invaluable to them. A big THANK YOU to Talie, Nanayaa, Amy and Paddy for their time and career wisdom!
