New Connections

Whilst the international political landscape continues to shift in surprising ways, you can count on us at Mountbatten Institute Alumni Association to keep you up to date with the Institute and fellow alumni with their latest news, achievements and business ventures etc. An exciting new development to notify you of is that the Institute is launching an official networking platform for Mountbatten Institute alumni, Mountbatten Connect. You can see the full details in our Special Feature below, but it should act as a real enhancement to existing social media sites, bringing all the functions of networking, event organising, re-connecting and publicising, all under one platform.

We are also happy to tell you that there will be a London based alumni networking event at the end of February/beginning of March due to popular request, and we will be posting out the details as soon as they have been confirmed. We hope this will be followed by a similar event in New York.

We are excited to announce the launch of our official networking platform for Mountbatten Programme alumni: Mountbatten Connect. We will be sending out invitations to join next week – so please keep an eye out for an email from the Mountbatten Connect Team! On Mountbatten Connect, you will be able to create your own individual profiles by importing your LinkedIn or Facebook profile. You can set your levels of engagement and privacy upon registration to use the platform in a way that suits you best! Use Mountbatten Connect to reconnect with fellow Mountbattens and catch up on what other alumni are doing, personally and professionally. You can also choose to be available to others as a mentor or simply use the platform to network and reconnect with friends.

You will be able to search through the platform’s directory and refine by intake year, programme location, current location, and more. On our events tab, you will be able to create reunions, happy hours, networking events, post your own business events that you want to invite alumni to, and more! You will be able to do an open invite, or choose who receives an invitation, based on location, intake year, or a number of other criteria. With alumni from over 30 years of the programme at top companies all over the world, there could be fellow alumni closer than you think! For our entrepreneurs, you will be able to create and manage your own page where you can link your website and showcase your company. We also have a space available for our entrepreneurs, Human Resources professionals, and hiring managers to post open positions at your companies so that fellow alumni, may apply. When you join the platform, explore and check out the latest Mountbatten news, upload some photos of your time on the programme, and please write us a quick hello in the updates section – we love to hear from you!

Please keep an eye out for the invitation email coming next week! If you would like to receive an early invitation to the platform – in order to create your own page, events, or job postings prior to the primary launch - please email Torrey Klett, Corporate Relations Manager at tklett@mountbatten.org.

Alum
of the Month

Frances Monroy
London, August 2013

"[After my internship], I moved to New York to continue working for Thomson Reuters. My Marketing team extended me a contract for another 6 months...[now] I still work for Thomson Reuters but I've transitioned into our corporate communications and brand team as an Internal Communications Specialist... I'm hoping to get more involved in organizational health and effectiveness. I've started to do that a little bit as an extension of my role as I'm training to facilitate corporate culture change workshops – aimed at shifting our culture to help employees manage change and be more open and curious about Thomson Reuters and the work we are trying to achieve... Socially, things are great! Can't go wrong when you live with two fellow Mountbatten alums in New York City!"

A Day In The Life

Henry Sage

New York, September 2009

Henry, a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University, currently works as a Business Development Manager for Mclcreate, a national live events company specialising in creative event production and audio-visual equipment. He is based in Soho Square and is responsible for acquiring new business revenue for the company from London based clients. However, he does like to finish the day with a "good pint of Nicholson's Pale Ale at the Dog and Duck on Frith Street"!

After graduating from Leeds, I started work at a small events and marketing company in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. (Yes, where the bear comes from!) I enjoyed the types of events I was getting involved with and started looking at opportunities in London. Having seen the Mountbatten Institute on-line one or two years prior, I saw it as a good time to apply for the internship with nothing really to lose.

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Philip Hannay

New York, September 2000

Philip, a grad and post grad of University of Aberdeen, incorporated Cloch Solicitors Limited in April 2011 and started trading after regulatory approval in January 2012; it is actually his fifth business venture (first fulltime and service business) since completing the Mountbatten programme. Philip founded the company after a decade in legal practice working for a large, mid-size and a niche commercial law firm, and after being crowned 'IP Lawyer of the Year' in consecutive years by the Law Awards of Scotland. Cloch typically acts for inventors, artists, engineers, software developers, scientists, entrepreneurs, high growth start-ups, and R&D divisions of mature trading companies which seek personable legal support in generating money from ideas and technology. Cloch has improved profitability and won a good number of UK legal awards year-on-year helping it in turn climb from a debut ranking of 'Upper Quartile' after its outstanding maiden performance to 'top 100' across the whole Scottish legal profession. Read on to find out how Philip got his inspiration for setting up his company, and what other ventures he is involved in.

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we have to report the recent passing of one of our alumni - James Cameron (New York, September 2003). James was tragically killed in a car accident early in the New Year, after having spent Christmas with his children. James was the father of 3 young children, and worked as Events Manager at one of Scotland's most prestigious golf clubs in Ayrshire - his 'dream job'. James is fondly remembered during his time on the Programme by fellow Mountbatten's and staff alike. He was full of energy and enthusiasm and ready to make the most of his time in NY, which he did. We are all immensely saddened that he is no longer with us. The fatality was reported in James' local press.

We would like to put a memory book together for James children, so if you were on his intake, or one of the others that overlapped, please send your memory, thoughts to Jo Harvey, so that we can pull the memories together. We are also exploring if there is a fund set up for his children, and will send through details of that when we have them. Our thoughts are with James children and family at this very difficult time.

Employment & Opportunities

Sandaire Investment Office in London, who recruited one of our alumni in a previous employment cycle, are looking to take on a Client Relationship Associate. The role, as described by an alum who works at Sandaire, "is a great opportunity for a charismatic alum looking to move from operations to front office". For full details of this position all other opportunities, please go to our alumni website.

Next month also heralds the beginning of the 2017 Recruitment and Careers Fairs at institutes of Higher Education in the Europe, and we are keen to enlist alumni assistance for these Fairs & Presentations. If you are able to give any assistance at these events, for which we are always extremely grateful, please let me know as soon as possible.
