November 2016 Edition

Tides of Change

Globally we are living in interesting and quite unpredictable times at present, but it's reassuring to know your monthly newsletter will continue to arrive full of alumni news, successes and updates. This month's content reflects the global reach of the programme, from an alum who has recently given a TED Talk as part of TEDx Dubai; our Alum of the Month regularly speaks on live TV giving his opinions about the latest economic and political stories; plus, an organisation offering an unique opportunity to spend 2 weeks helping early stage businesses across Africa. Following on from the recent US Presidential Election, we have the first hand account of an alum who was part of President Elect, Donald Trump's election campaign.

We would like to take this opportunity to give a big "thank you" to all our alumni volunteers who have assisted at various university careers fairs, presentations and webinars. Your help really adds some authentication to the marketing experience, and is encouraging students to apply for the programme.

Finally, I am still collecting the Alumni 6 Month Surveys from London and New York March 2015 intakes. If you haven't already, please do take the 5 minutes to complete it, as we need to be able to publish our employment statistics alongside other institutes of higher education. Thank you.

TEDxWoman

The subject of our Star Feature this month is a previous Alum of the Month (August 2014) Zainub (Jenna) Bata LLB, (New York, March 2009 MBA), who has achieved a lot in a short time. Jenna has a background in law and now practices as a mediator and trainer primarily based out of Toronto and New York. She is also a travel writer for the Huffington Post (Writing Profile) and a speaker who has spoken at various events as the key note speaker (including TEDx Dubai).

Jenna defines herself as a social entrepreneur, having worked internationally with women led businesses since she started her company 5 years ago, and has also coached women in both business and building confidence. However, it is her recent experience as a speaker at the TEDx Dubai that we would particularly like to highlight this month. TED, is a non-profit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world. Jenna recently delivered a speech at TEDxDeiraWomen, and here you can view her Dubai women's business council promo video.

To find out what other international projects Jenna has been involved with, check out her LinkedIn profile.

of the Month

Joshua Mahony MSTA
New York, Sep 2010

"Unlike analysts in banks, the role is less specialised and you end up being a one-stop shop for anything market related. Speaking on live-TV about my opinions relating to the latest economic or political stories, running seminars teaching trading techniques, speaking to journalists, writing analysis on company or economic issues, going out with clients, the list goes on... Often you end up live on TV with no preparation and no idea what the anchor is about to ask you. But in some ways, those occasions give you a buzz and make your day more interesting".

Fundraising Alumni

Fiona Dally (New York, September 2001) recently ran in the NYC Marathon, (where some of our NY Programme trainees were volunteers) and has managed to raise over £1,365 so far towards Cancer Research. Oh, and she managed a brilliant 15,732 out of nearly 52,000 runners, completing in 4 hours 06 (so next challenge will be to chase the sub 4 hours slot!). It was confirmed as the largest marathon in the world, and boasted over 1m spectators watching the event. Congratulations to Fiona for all her efforts and achievements and for sharing them with us.

Alice, a graduate of The University of Warwick and a postgraduate of the The University of Edinburgh, currently holds the post of HR Manager for URBN UK Ltd, which is the UK subsidiary of Urban Outfitters Inc. Ryan Caudelle

London, March 2014 MBA

Ryan is a graduate of the University of Georgia. He currently holds the post of the Georgia GOP State Victory Director where he oversaw six field staff operating out of over 20 offices across the state for voter contact efforts. Ryan describes how, "One day I could be recruiting volunteers to make voter calls, and the next I may have a rally for Donald Trump with 15,000 people in attendance where I would manage VIP's, Secret Service requirements and venue staff... On days we had a large event I wouldn't eat until after everything was done at night. And yes, I may have sent an intern or two out to get me food on occasion!" For the inside story on "one of the most well organized and well-funded candidates in (US Election Campaign history)", Read on.

Employment & Opportunities

This month we have a unique opportunity given to us by alum Ruby White (New York, August 2013) who would like to give other alumni the chance to participate in a philanthropic social enterprise. Do you want to use your skills and experience to make a difference in developing countries? Help early stage businesses across Africa with business strategy and innovation by applying to take part in one of the two week programmes run by The Baobab Network.

The Baobab Network is a social enterprise with a fresh outlook on social and economic development. They offer world class strategy consulting services to high potential, socially focused, start-up companies in Sub Saharan Africa. Baobab takes teams of consultants on a two week placement to Sub Saharan Africa to deliver strategy projects that help the region's most exciting start-up companies grow. There is a huge need for strategic support amongst Africa's start-up ecosystem, as entrepreneurs begin to scale their ideas and secure key funding rounds. They focus their project work on high potential early stage companies that are innovating in the Finance, Education, Talent and Agri sectors, delivering high impact strategy work that helps companies grow revenue, raise finance and scale. These two week engagements offer a unique way to gain challenging first hand emerging markets experience, working with exciting early stage businesses that are desperately in need of strategic support.

They are currently recruiting for programmes 2017 and have an exciting schedule of work coming up.

To find out about all other employment opportunities including SRi Sports Media and Entertainment, which is based in London, and are looking to recruit an Executive Assistant to the Global Managing Director, please go to our alumni website.

Also, congratulations to the August 2015 alum from the New York intake, who recently started at Sandaire Investment Office in a Client Relations Associate role. This was a role we recently advertised on our website and was given to us by another alum who works in the company. So do let Vicki know if you have any vacancies in your company that you think would be ideal for alumni, especially those who have recently finished the programme - it's a great way to assist your fellow alumni.
