January 2016 Edition

New Year, New Look!

Happy New Year to all of our illustrious alumni. We hope this newsletter finds you full of new ideas, achievable goals and overall optimism for the forthcoming year. We at Mountbatten Institute would love to hear about your professional and personal plans for 2016, especially new business launches, charitable challenges, awards gained and marriages to take place, so keep in touch.

We are excited ourselves to be launching our new look newsletter this month to mark its 4th Birthday. We can't believe it is already 4, and to mark this occasion we have re-visited one of our early Entrepreneurs of the Month Anika Mistry, who just happened to be re-launching her cake business this month and kindly provided the header graphic and even sent in the cupcakes she made especially for the photograph for our London staff to sample! They were beautiful & delicious, thank you.

Throughout the Institute our campus recruitment starts again this month and we will publish a list of universities/institutes we are visiting in case you are free to assist. This help has been really positively received by our staff and prospective programme candidates, so thank you again to all those who have assisted already.

Our newsletter content includes our regular features such as Alum of the Month, Day in Life of, Entrepreneurs and Jobs, amongst other features and we are always open to your feedback and article suggestions.

Could you or your company offer a placement to a bright, eager Mountbatten?

As you know we facilitate up to 500 placements annually in NY and London, and we are looking for new dynamic opportunities in both locations for our candidates.

For more information on how to get your company or team involved in offering a placement please email Jo Harvey on jharvey@mountbatten.org

"I now run a strategy where ten global chocolate companies have committed to work on sustainability in their supply chains. This means the companies commit to helping the farmers and communities where their cocoa is produced. I get to travel to Europe and West Africa often and work directly with big brands, non-profits and governments."

A Day In The Life

Sian Williams (New York, March 2011), a graduate of Aberystwyth University, currently works for FT Live which is the events division of the Financial Times. The department runs over 200 events a year and Sian works across a mix of three day industry conferences, award ceremonies and arts events.

"I cycle to work most days and arrive early so that I can shower and get breakfast before everyone else starts at 9.30. The week before a major event is always really busy so I spend the morning catching up on emails and confirming final arrangements with speakers, before joining the final project team meeting to plan the week ahead. A team of 10 of us will be flying out to Switzerland on the weekend to prepare for a three day summit which will begin on Monday.

"In the afternoon I send a final briefing to all speakers to confirm their travel and accommodation arrangements and agenda for the three days. We have over 30 speakers so this takes a while. I also make a start on planning the seating plan for the summit dinner which I will finalise next week and finishing off a few tasks for other events that will be coming up over the next few months. I spend the last part of the day updating the summit website with some last minute changes and help the Logistics Manager to pack the equipment to be shipped out to Switzerland."

Please note that FT Live are actively recruiting a Commercial Support Executive based in London. Full details on our alumni website.

Entrepreneurial Alumni

Anika Mistry

New York, Aug 2011

Anika has recently re-branded and re-launched her modern cake business Love Rosie Cakes & Cupcakes. They bake cakes for any occasion including birthdays, celebrations, weddings and anything else possible! Anika and her sister together have completely changed the way in which they bake and style their cakes – using her design background and creative eye to style cakes that taste as indulgent and delicious as they look. Each cake is individually created and they like to use decorations that are seasonal and entirely edible.

Visit her website www.loverosiecupcakes.co.uk to see her new cakes and styles and follow her on her Instagram account @loverosiecupcakes and hopefully she can bake for you soon!

Paul Sykes

New York, Jan 2006

Paul has worked in the aviation finance industry following on from his placement with RBS Aviation Capital in New York, and is currently launching an industry website called www.flyfunder.com.

Paul goes on to explain: "It is a site that matches the buyers of Business Jets and Helicopters with aviation-specialist financiers and takes a small commission for the introduction. The aim is to fill a communication void that exists between buyers (who can be corporate institutions, governments or individuals) and financiers (like myself). Currently it is very difficult for buyers to find all of their options and get the best deal and for financiers to find deal leads in a market currently dominated by word of mouth recommendations and referrals. We are excited about the product launch as it is a completely new concept in our industry."

Jobs

Over the past few years, we have worked quite closely with the recruitment agency Robert Walters London division, to assist in placing some of our graduates upon their return to the City. They do have offices in a number of other cities/countries as well, but the London presence is their main office.

Robert Walters recently had the following update for us on the previous group from which they have successfully placed 4 individuals so far (based on those who RSVP’d for the event held). These roles sit in Marketing, Front Office Support and Operations with BNP Paribas, Janus Capital, Bovil and Castleton Commodities (who recently bought the Morgan Stanley Commodities business). They have also arranged interviews across all disciplines with an array of companies including the following: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, M&G Investments, Hargreave Hale, Blackrock, Nomura, Brown Advisory, Ruffer (Private Wealth Managment), PIMCO and Omni Partners.
