The weather is looking up, there are some interesting job opportunities (especially for new returners), and some exciting events to tell you about. Firstly, in case you have missed previous communications, this year the Mountbatten Institute celebrates its 30th Anniversary culminating in two main alumni gala events, one in New York (Friday 3rd October), and one in London (Friday 24th October). Please make a note and save the date, and very soon you will receive your official invitation with full details. We hope these events will be the biggest and most widely attended of all the Institute events to date. The aim is to celebrate across the intakes from inception in 1984 up to the new alumni groups, and also to celebrate the many different cultures that have embraced and participated in the programme up to the present day. So get ready to book your place at a table.
Other news includes a brave Mountbatten Alumni Pub Quiz team, comprising Lynne Ault (March 2010 - London), Tom Eisner (September 2010 - New York), Audrianna Sibiski (March 2011 - London) and Jo Harvey representing the Mountbatten Institute, joined in the quiz fun at the inaugural BritishAmericanBusiness Pub Quiz on Wednesday 9th April in New York. The team played under a name inspired by ALL alumni ‘NYLON Hustle’. The team definitely became more confident as the quiz developed but sadly the British movie trivia round at the beginning got the better of them! Something they took note of for the next time! They were however in the running for the best team name – NYLON Hustle was in the top 3! It was a lot of fun, and we will definitely want to put another Alumni team together for the next BABI Pub Quiz – so keep an eye out for announcements.
So enjoy the spring, get fit and healthy and embrace all opportunities, to ensure that there's loads to share with your fellow alumni and programme staff, when we all get together at the 30th Anniversary Gala Dinners in October.
Tartan Day in New York
On Saturday 5th April, current Mountbattens in New York, Pippa Ward, Sobitha Maheswaran, Vicki Downey (Mountbatten Institute Chief of Staff), Abigail Howes and Katie Bagley joined the Tartan Day Parade with a march from West 45th Street up 6th Avenue to 55th Street. According to IMC Chair Lois Wilkins: "It was a fantastic opportunity getting in touch with our Scottish roots, donning our tartan, walking along 6th avenue to the sound of bagpipes! As a volunteer, it was great to see the many bands and societies come together to create an unforgettable day".

Entrepreneurial Alumni
 Charlotte Kohlmann (August 2008 - London): Spleat is a mobile payments app for your social life. When you are out with your friends at a restaurant, bar or club, you can simply open a tab, add your friends on the tab, and split and pay the bill all on your mobile. It is like the Uber of Hailo for the hospitality industry! I started the company a little over a year ago with a friend of mine in London. Neither of us knew how to code so after raising seed investment, we brought on our CTO to actually bring our idea to life. My role within the company is basically everything besides the actual development work on the app. Read all about how Charlotte started her own business.

A day in the life of...
 Catherine Bristow (January 2001 - New York), works for Dame Vera Lynn (best known as the World War 2 forces sweetheart and her song "We'll Meet Again") as an events fundraiser. She works for her charity which supports children and babies with cerebral palsy. This means the parents can come to their school free of charge and receive the support and help they need. They have to raise GBP £650,000 a year, as the charity receives no government funding. They are a small team of eight but they are award winning as at the end of 2013 they were granted Charity of The Year by the West Sussex County Times.
"I would love to give you a typical day, but no day is ever the same. Last month I was helping my colleague out by dressing up as Velma from Scoody Doo and running in the charity pancake race. To last week face painting one hundred kids at our Easter egg hunt. It's great helping out my colleagues, however my job is to organise the larger scale events, including the Arundle to Brighton walk we did in 2013 which raised GBP £17,500, to our Swingtime Ball at the Grand Hotel in Brighton which had over 35 acts and nearly 200 guests." Meanwhile, Google in Mountain View, California are recruiting an HR Coordinator; and, Bain & Gray, a recruitment consultancy in the city who have found employment for a number of our alumni in the last few years, have a list of available administration/PA/EA positions in and around London.
