Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

August/September 2013

As we print the last newsletter of the summer, the sun is still shining and not showing any sign of autumn chill just yet - long may it last. Meanwhile, life at Mountbatten continues apace with graduation ceremonies in New York and Bangkokl a special Duke of Edinburgh Scheme launch in an inner city school in New York, which had royalty and Mountbatten staff and alumni in attendance; plus, the new cohort arriving in New York to start their internship year, and boasting J1 visas processed from 18 different countries. All these stories are included within the newsletter below, as well as a fundraising alumni hoping to gain support for running in London's largest half marathon on 8th September, and the usual Alum of the Month, and Jobs sections.

We also have plenty of activities in store for you in the autumn including our annual Halloween party (see Events).

Finally, most of you will be aware by now that the British Royal Family has gained a new member in the form of Prince George Alexander Louis, a son to HRH Prince William and his wife Katherine, Duchess of Cambridge. Dr Paul Beresford-Hill is delighted to share with us all a very special connection with this new baby...

Mountbatten News

Mountbatten Duke of Edinburgh award holders were recenlty invited to assist at an event in New York to launch the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in an inner city at risk school. HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex attended the event, and is pictured above with Dr. Paul Beresford-Hill (Director General of Mountbatten Institute), and three gold medal awardees including Chris Chilton (March 2013 - New York) and Vicki Downey (Chief of Staff at Mountbatten Institute). Vicki Downey has also recently been made a World Fellow of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Foundation.

We would like to congratulate all attendees on their achievements and for giving a shining example to others.

Mountbatten Cultural Diversity

"This summer, New York programme participants processed J1 visas in 18 different countries and this weekend, they will come together as they move into their shared accommodation in Newport, New Jersey and begin an international adventure as a group of strangers in a foreign land. This special journey, designed to give them a unique insight into American life and US culture, actually gives them so much more. Living amongst such a diverse cultural group will provide an invaluable education into different ways of life, customs and values. An new intern from Ireland might move in with a Brit, a Slovakian, and two Indian girls, for instance." - Vikki Hedges - Read Full Article.

Mountbatten Baby Announcement

We are delighted to announce that Jonny Hough and Claire Collins (January 1999 - New York), gave birth to their second child on the 22nd June, a little baby boy called Theodore Watson Hough. Jonny seems to be embracing fatherhood, and has already got Theodore and his big sister Evelyn down as future Mountbatten candidates! Many congratulations to you all.

August 12 Completion & Awards Ceremony - New York

On 15 August 2013 on a particularly warm night, we gathered at the prestigious Union League Club in Murray Hill, NYC to celebrate the year of the August 2012 intake. Despite a few delays the event was a great success!

Chief of Staff, Vicki Downey welcomed everyone and congratulated them on their achievements during the year, and Dr. Paul Beresford-Hill, Director General was on hand to present some special awards for those students who had demonstrated outstanding achievements during the year.

The Valedictorian speech was delivered by Rob Martin and a message of greetings and congratulations was conveyed by Dr. Paul on behalf of Senator Paul Strauss, who unfortunately was detained in DC on official business. Senator Strauss reissued his invitation to any Mountbatten, current or Alumni, to visit him in DC. (If you are interested in this please drop a note to Vicki Downey and she will send you his details.)

We were delighted to have graduating Mountbatten, Tim Hill who has been our 'piper' for the year, lead out our honored guests. Following the ceremony all were invited to a wonderful Valedictorian Dinner in the Historic Dining Room at the club.

Congratulations and Good Luck to all of our August 2012 trainees. Full details & Photo album.

Summer Softball/Dodgeball Tournament

On Saturday 10th August, a group of current and former Mountbattens got together in Canary Wharf for an afternoon of softball/baseball with some dodgeball and drinks thrown in. Although the tournament turned out to be a mixture of different games with varying rules, it was good natured and fun, with all players and spectators enjoying a celebratory drink with the winning team.

The London interns will now mostly have left the UK, and so we wish them well with their travels and subsequent steps on the career ladder. Please keep in touch, and let us know how you get on.

Fundraising Alumni

Jamie Ross (March 2011- London) is going to be running London's largest half marathon Run to the Beat on 8 September in Greenwich Park for the British Heart Foundation in memory of his late father, Alan. Tragically, Alan died unexpectedly from Ischemic Heart Disease in June aged 69. Jamie would really like to spread the word as far as possible about this fantastic charity, and you can find out how to help on his fundraising page.

We deeply sympathise with Jamie's recent loss, and would like to wish him the very best of luck for the half marathon.
