Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

This summer's events are coming in thick and fast, with the Queen still doing her Jubilee tour throughout the UK, we're in the throws of Euro 2012, Wimbledon is halfway through, 4th July will soon be upon us, and, we have Olympic fever starting to gain momentum. What a summer! Put into the mix a Mountbatten wedding, which was recently celebrated in Ireland, and there is really cause for celebrations and high spirits all around.

In this issue, as well as featuring more of your Jubilee stories, we share some of your Wimbledon experiences; publish details of Robert Walters placement statistics for the March 2011 returners to the UK this year; and share an article that was published in The Wall Street Journal on 12th June called Brits Keep Calm, Carry On in NYC in which you can read a quote by Jo Harvey of our New York office.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this issue, especially Jonny and Claire, for their "Mountbatten wedding".

A Mountbatten Wedding

We were delighted to receive the following news from Jonny Hough and Claire Collins (January 1999 - New York), who announced their marriage after a whirlwind romance.

They met in Freshers week at Liverpool University in 1995, it was in their final year at Liverpool that they heard about the Mountbatten Internship Programme and both agreed that they'd love to spend a year in New York. In Jonny's words, "We had an absolutely amazing year there, making many very, good friends." Claire worked at Mendes & Mount and Jonny worked at Park Avenue Health Care.

They had a wonderful wedding at Claire's parents home in Ireland on June 9th 2012, and as well as close family and friends, the Mountbatten programme was represented by Andrew Douglas, Dan and Laura Wiles and John McCarthy. Their daughter Evelyn was also baptized as part of the ceremony.

Jonny was one of the founding members of the Alumni Committee in London, and we would like to thank him for his great contribution to the Committee, as well as giving both Jonny and Claire our congratulations on the birth of their daughter and the celebration of their marriage.

A Mountbatten Jubilee Celebration

As the Queen continues her Jubilee tour around the UK, we hear how a group of our alumni have celebrated the Diamond Jubilee.

Dana Bobrowski (August 2007 - London) and a small group of alumni held a special dinner in the Queen's Honour in London (4 alumni actually flew into London from the US to attend the event!). In Dana's own words:

"On 2nd June 2012, Mountbatten alumni from the August 2007 London intake, Dana Bobrowski, Kyle Gisbrecht, Chris Holman, Kathleen Jarmon Wickersham, Sean Wickersham, Stephanie Zhu and their guests, celebrated Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee with a private black tie dinner inside the Babylon Restaurant at Kensington Roof Gardens. Each gave a rousing toast to the Queen, celebrating by wearing royal family masks, and continuing the jubilee party at the Roof Gardens."

The Diamond Jubilee Bash!

Mountbatten Institute alumni, current interns and staff, all had a wonderful time recently at the GEORGE Diamond Jubilee Bash, where around 265 people (mainly Brits), gathered at Times Square's Edison Ballroom to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. There was fundraising, British chocolate and lots of dancing!

Volunteering for the Runyon 5K is a fun way for friends, co-workers and family members to take part in this unique event and will help us make it a great success! We're looking for enthusiastic and reliable people to help out with everything from set-up and breakdown to cheering on participants as they run or walk a 5K through Yankee Stadium in support of cancer research. Most of the volunteer activities take place on the day of the event but there are volunteer opportunities prior to race day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register now.

Alum of the Month

David Hobbs
January 2004 - New York

"I was thrown in at the deep end with numerous files being given to me from an early stage... I was greatly indebted to the Mountbatten interns from earlier intakes who were invaluable in building my knowledge." Read full story.

Wimbledon Alumni

Here we have a few alumni sharing their Wimbledon experiences, to get everybody in the mood for tennis.

Brad Howell (March 2011 - London): "I did attend the men's semi-finals last year at Wimbledon. It was an incredible experience as I have always watched the event on TV, but had never been able to go up to last year. There is so much history there and the venue is gorgeous. Also, having the opportunity to see the top players in the world play was amazing. I would recommend that everyone make an effort to go, even if you aren't the biggest tennis fan, as it really is a great experience."

Heather Karwowski (March 2008 - London): "During my first few months of my 2008 Marchie year I was so excited to be able to attend Wimbledon. This was something I had always wanted to do. After standing in line for hours with my good friend and fellow Mountbatten Josie Clark (September 2007 - London) with our general tickets we made it into the gates. We were having a lovely time in the sunshine (yes it was sunny!) eating strawberries and cream enjoying the matches. We were then approached by a young couple who offered us their center court tickets for free! It was amazing, we had front row balcony tickets to see the best of the best playing! We saw Andy Murray win a match. The atmosphere was great as all the Brits were so happy to have one of their own advance. Then to our delight Venus and Serena Williams played doubles! We were so close you could hear what they were saying to each other on the court. What a day!"

Vinay Agrawal (March 2008 - London): "It was the first week of the tournament and everyone at my workplace was talking about Wimbledon. I wanted to experience Wimbledon at first hand, and I was told that they sell ground tickets every morning, and if I got there early, I could get in. So I decided to try with one of my school friends and managed to get in. Sitting on Henman Hill and watching the games whilst eating strawberries, was great. Also, the atmosphere out there was perfect to enjoy the few summer days one gets in London. As I am from India, I did see Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupati play on one of the side courts. Also, while there, I was informed that after 3pm they resell show court tickets once people start leaving. We managed to get one of these after standing in the line and got to see Roger Federer play. That you could say could be one of the highlight not only of my internship, but also of my life. In all, I would highly recommend going to Wimbledon as it is once in a lifetime experience."

Thank you to all contributors, I am sure you will inspire others to go to the Grand Tournament.

Jobs

We recently received this very uplifting news from Sian Williams (March 2011 - New York) "I just wanted to send a quick email to say thank you. I returned home to Wales in April 2012 and began looking for work in London. I saw the advert on the Alumni sight for a Marketing Assistant role at Lodestar and applied. I got the job and am now living and working in London and loving every minute of it. This position was a great opportunity for me as I have no previous experience in marketing. Hopefully however it will put me on the right track to build a career in marketing. I now appreciate just how important Mountbatten can be in terms of getting you through the interview door and I wanted to thank you for all your work on the Alumni site and for keeping us updated with all the newest opportunities." We would like to congratulate Sian on her achievement, and wish her every success in her future career.

We are also delighted to publish some recently compiled statistics from Robert Walters, who held a drinks reception in London in April for the March 2011-2012 returners from New York. Out of approximately 30 alumni, who either attended the event or met separately with RW recruitment consultants as they were unable to attend on the day, 10 have been placed, and a number of others have had interviews. Given the market conditions, RW thought this approximate 33% placement rate is a good success rate, and one they definitely hope to build on. Recent placement companies include Morgan Stanley, London Stock Exchange, FTSE, Brewin Dolphin, CLS, and HSBC.

Check out all the current vacancies we have on our website, and go to Robert Walters for their designated Mountbatten alumni micro site.
