Welcome to the Alumni Newsletter

March 2012

Although we haven't celebrated Easter yet, we could be forgiven for thinking we are already in the middle of summer, due to the glorious weather we have been experiencing lately. Thoughts turn to sport and fitness, changes for the better and outdoor pursuits.

In terms of alumni activities, employment openings continue with a certain buoyancy; sporting accounts abound; and, over 120 alumni have signed up for our upcoming event on 24th April! Also in this issue, you will see two inspiring alumni giving their personal accounts of charitable involvement during their internships.

On a slightly different note, we have a special request on behalf of Mountbatten Institute, whether you are working in New York or London, if you think your company might be interested in becoming a host organisation and giving a Mountbatten the opportunity you have had, please contact:
Jo Harvey - New York Office
Isobel Hedges - London Office

Finally, at our last Alumni Committee Meeting, a feature on Mountbatten weddings was a popular suggestion. If you are involved, or know of any weddings past or present involving Mountbatten alumni either marrying each other, or someone they met whilst on the Programme, we would love to hear your stories. Valentine's Day might be long gone, but we all like a bit of romance.

Until our next issue...

Theatrical Alumni

Kate Denby (May 2002 - New York) pictured with Dr Paul Beresford-Hill and Jo Harvey of our New York office, where she popped in during her recent stay in the city for the run of her theatre production in NYC, The Kreutzer Sonata. We would like to congratulate Kate on such a great success.

Charitable Alumni

Rachel Solomon (March 2010 - London) volunteered with KEEN in London and shared her story:
"Imagine having a cheeky British 8-year-old teasing you to jump higher on a giant trampoline: C'mon, man up for America! These were the playful words of encouragement I often received when volunteering through KEEN, an organization that runs recreational activities for children with developmental disabilities." Alex Smith (September 2007 - New York) helped children with BAS while in New York and was inspired to launch his own charity, North London Cares, on his return to London:
"North London Cares launched on the worst day of the riots last August. We weren't really ready to begin our work -- we had no money, no office, no staff -- but my mates and I were angry that our city was being eaten by its young, and wanted to use our new organisation to encourage people to show the true spirit of London." 2012 - Year of Sport

Snow Bowl Flag Football Tournament

On Sunday 4th March, 14 of your fellow Mountbattens took part in a charity flag football tournament held at the MetLife stadium (home to the Super Bowl winning New York Giants). The 'Mountbatten Mountain Goats' took part in the COED division and raised over $2,500 in the process! Read Full Story

Harpreet Mangat (September 2010 - New York) will be taking part in Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the world's leading charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Their vital work is funded entirely by the public so whatever you can give really will make a difference.
She will be walking, jogging or running (she's not sure which) for them this summer. Any support is truly appreciated and she would love to see you walk, jog or run too or lining the streets of London (possibly with pink coloured pom-poms)!

Kavya Shree
March 2010 - London

"While on the programme I realized there is a good balance of required course work and practical training that can be tailored to our specific needs. And it's not a cliché to say that you will learn as much from your classmates as you do from the course itself. Everyone will be so collegiate and helpful and the programme fosters a unique sense of teamwork."

Alumni Committee Updates & Announcement

When the Mountbatten Institute London based Alumni Committee met recently, we were delighted to welcome two new members, Jennifer Way (September 2010 - New York) and Conor Chapple (January 2006 - New York). Both were full of fresh ideas to help keep us in touch with our alumni, so we look forward to a fun events programme over the next few months.
